| Abstract: | Climate change requires urgent and effective responses, grounded in a gradual transition toward a low-carbon economy. Mitigation actions for greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions require not only emission reductions but also the adoption of technologies capable of removing carbon dioxide (CO₂) from the atmosphere, including the provision of net negative emissions under a life-cycle assessment approach. Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS) may represent a strategic alternative for decarbonization and for strengthening the energy transition.This research investigates the potential, challenges, and opportunities for applying BECCS in the Brazilian sugarcane and bioenergy industry, with a focus on quantifying the capture potential of CO₂ emitted during the fermentation process in ethanol plants. It considers its biogenic origin, high purity level (around 99%), ease of capture, the existence of deep saline aquifers and other potential reservoirs, as well as a national energy matrix with a high share of bioenergy. These characteristics may provide favorable conditions for the adoption of BECCS, with the possibility of increasing revenues through the emerging carbon market.The methodology included a review of scientific and technical literature, documentary analysis of institutional and governmental databases, and data collection on plant production and location, pipeline networks, and potential areas for geological CO₂storage. As an illustration, a field visit was conducted to an FS corn ethanol biorefinery in Lucas do Rio Verde (MT), where a pioneering BECCS project is being implemented. Thematic maps in shapefile format were developed to support integrated spatial analyses and the identification of potential areas for the establishment of BECCS clusters.The results indicate high potential in certain regions of the country. The research also provides recommendations for improving public policies aimed at implementing this technology, supporting the decarbonization of hard-to-abate sectors and positioning Brazil as a leader in solutions aligned with national and international climate targets. |
