| Abstract: | Timber harvesting, especially in tropical regions, has led to significant environmental impacts, including biodiversity loss and increased greenhouse gas emissions. Brazil, as one of the largest producers of tropical timber, faces challenges regarding the legality of timber origin, largely due to fraud in documentation that certifies its provenance. This study aimed to evaluate multielement analysis as a technique for determining the geographic origin of timber harvested in the Brazilian Amazon, considering the influence of environmental and genetic factors on the chemical composition of wood. It discusses the importance of methods that go beyond document verification, as the mere issuance of documents, such as the Forest Origin Document (DOF), does not guarantee timber authenticity, especially in non-integrated supply chains. The research adopted a multidisciplinary methodology, integrating dendrochemical techniques and multielement analysis. Wood samples from different species were collected across the Amazon, and their chemical composition was analyzed to identify trace elements that may indicate geographic origin. The results show that multielement analysis can discriminate timber samples from different locations, revealing significant differences in the concentrations of chemical elements. Elements such as Cr, Se, B, Zn, Ba, and Pb stood out as markers with significant differences among regions. The study highlights the relevance of multielement analysis as a promising tool for traceability and regulating the trade of forest products. Our findings may contribute to public policies aimed at environmental conservation and sustainable forest management, helping to combat illegal logging. |
