Abstract:	With the rise of the institutional framework, the quality of institutions has become a solid argument to explain various social phenomena. Quickly, institutional quality was incorporated into the environmental debate. In general, robust institutions play a crucial role in promoting effective environmental policies. On the other hand, weak institutions tend to allocate resources inefficiently, have low implementation and enforcement of environmental regulations, and suffer from corruption, which can lead to higher levels of environmental degradation. Understanding how institutional quality affects environmental quality is essential to identify challenges and propose solutions for implementing better environmental governance practices. Three independent yet interconnected essays were proposed to aid in understanding the relationship between institutional and environmental quality. The first essay aims to map scientific productions that relate the two themes through bibliometric analysis and systematic literature review, conducted using the Consolidated Meta-Analytical Approach Theory (TEMAC) method. The quantitative and qualitative analysis of scientific productions contributed to identifying the main studies in this thematic field, as well as constructing the knowledge structure, identifying the main research topics, contributions, and gaps yet to be filled. The following two essays aim to fill some of these gaps. In essay 2, the hypothesis of a nexus between institutional quality and environmental quality in Latin American countries was tested, with the analysis pointing to a low interest in the topic in this region. To address the gap in intra-country analyses, the third essay presents an empirical study of the interaction between institutional quality and environmental quality in Brazilian municipalities. In addition to institutional quality, the studies analyze the effects of other economic and financial indicators on environmental degradation, represented by CO2 emission levels. The contributions of this thesis go beyond the estimation of econometric models and the mapping of the knowledge structure. An indicator of institutional quality was constructed for Brazilian municipalities, aiming to address the lack of local-level indicators. The results of this study indicate that strengthening institutions is a viable approach to achieving beneficial environmental solutions without compromising economic interests.
