Abstract:	There is little information regarding the physiological behavior of seeds from forest species used for food in traditional populations, particularly from nonconventional food plants. Understanding these aspects is essential for the development of appropriate conservation strategies. The objective of this research was to study the physiological behavior and storage potential of seeds from little-known food forest species in communities of the Riozinho do Liberdade Extractive Reserve and the Croa community, both located in the Southwest of the Amazon. To achieve this, a diagnosis of edible plants was conducted through an inventory along the residents' trails. The plants were mapped and characterized both qualitatively and quantitatively, including information about the environment in which they are found and their phenological periods. Biometric studies were carried out on the seeds. Information about the type of fruit, dispersal syndromes, and fruit color, when possible, was also described. The physiological behavior regarding storage was identified using the protocols of Hong and Ellis (1996), Pritchard et al. (2004), and Daws et al. (2006) as applicable to each case. The information generated in this research expanded knowledge about the diversity of forest species used as food by traditional populations, determining the physiological characteristics of seeds from five species (Perebea tessmannii, Pseudolmedia laevis, Ampelozizyphus amazonicus, Duroia sp. e Brosimum lactescens). All tests were conducted in different laboratories at the Forest Campus of the Federal University of Acre (UFAC), Cruzeiro do Sul. The creation of a georeferenced seed matrix network aimed at an in situ conservation model, which is linked to food sovereignty, as well as actions for ex situ conservation research. This work is enhancing the existing partnership between the community and the researchers at the Laboratory. In this context, by expanding knowledge about the physiological behavior of native food species of the Amazon, efforts were made to optimize the processes of production, collection, processing, and storage of seeds, thereby improving knowledge in the seed technology sector.
