Abstract:	Investigating a contemplative spiritual tradition I chose an approach based on participation as an strategy to understand the substance of this type of experience of the sacred. Besides theory, the anthropologist's body must become an instrument for field research. Instead of emphasizing sight and neutral distant observation, it is a matter of including the anthropologist’s body, senses and emotions as part of his/her strategies in the field in order to make contact with the techniques, aims and effects of the systems of meditation. While the sinologisfs approach privileges the interpretation of classical texts, I concentrated on a concrete contemporary version of Taoism, a group from São Paulo, structured around the Chinese master Liu Pai Lin. I focus on the practical aspects of that tradition as structuring a particular kind of experience of the world and amplify the notion of narrative to include utterances and literary works, iconography and body techniques, boths their situational modes of articulation in the present, as well as the performative context of oral and practical teaching. At the same time, I discuss some possibilities of ehtnographing meditation and ambiguities of anthropolcxjist’s position.
