| Abstract: | Introduction: Efficiency is a fundamental concept for basketball performance. The easiness of shooting, favored by the target position above the floor, is counter-balanced by the defensive ability to restrict the offensive dynamics, favored by the time constraint imposed by the 24- seconds shot clock and the great density of players closer to the scoring zone. The most available source of information of game performance in basketball is the set of game-related statistics (GRSs), usually summarized in the box score. The box score summarization of GRSs presents limitations to the understanding of the game since it relates to end of possession events and do not assess the game dynamics. Complementary, the play-by-play (pbp) data, frequently available together with the box score, consists in a description of game actions in the order they happened, providing some dynamic information of the game. Nonetheless, it has not been as diffused as the box score. The goal of the present study is to evaluate a player's performance in a game, synthesized in his individual efficiency, by assessing his GRSs in the pbp data which enable the analysis of some dynamic features not available in the box score. Methods: The first step of the study was to present a framework in which pbp data could be explored. For this purpose, we present a new alternative for the calculation of the efficiency index used by the Basketball International Federation (FIBA), fixing validity issues of the current index. The new method is denominated Points Produced Index (PPI) and consists in calculating player's efficiency in performing each GRS and estimating the equivalence of the GRSs performed in terms of points, in a league average game. The second step was to define game moments according to time and/or scoring variables (e.g. garbage time). Game moments are used to provide context to the player evaluation based on pbp data. Finally, the GRSs were specified utilizing the pbp data (e.g. assist for a lay-up, rebound after free-throw). Afterwards, this framework, encompassing the three theoretical steps, were applied to investigate a player's efficiency in a game. Sample consisted of players from the 2018/2019 season of Novo Basquete Brasil (NBB) that achieved the criteria of: i) playing at least 130 minutes in the season; ii) at least 10 minutes across the season in each analyzed moment (e.g. clutch time); iii) at least 30 minutes across the season in each of the four game periods. Proper statistic techniques were applied to test differences between efficiency calculation methods for each comparison performed. Results: The proposed PPI did not present significant difference between box score and pbp based calculated values. Nonetheless, PPI presented a more homogeneous correlation with the GRSs (between 0.286-0.705) than the current efficiency calculation method. For game moments, the analysis presented the fourth quarter with distinct patterns from the rest of the game, especially for personal fouls. Furthermore, when game score was considered there was an increase in player's average performance at the end of close games. Players that shoot more frequently in close games have better shooting efficiency than other players, in the super clutch as well. We also found that rebounding on specific situations (e.g. after free throw) does not significantly modify the total rebounding efficiency average. On the contrary, the removal of offensive fouls from the personal fouls decrease the percentage of personal fouls for centers. Discussion: In general, the use of pbp data improves the understanding of the game, despite not improving the calculation of a player's efficiency. The efficiency in specific situations calculated with the pbp data can improve the strategy design for the game. A broader approach to player's efficiency should benefit the reasoning of the game for players, coaches and practitioners. |
