Abstract:	The monologue of Grande Sertão: veredas is constructed from the description of a real world: the brazilian backwoods governed by the typical violence of coronelismo in the beginning of that century. This reality, however, is distant from the daily life of the lettered brazilians and it ends up looking like much more to a myth than to an feasible experience. Since the beginning of the regional novel in Brazil, such scenarios and legends have offered a very rich material for the fabulation and the literary making. But it was in the traumatic experience, in the violence of the actions and discourses of the backwood, that Guimarães Rosa sought the universe of meanings with which he composed his capital work. Through a speech filled with exaltations, confessions and lamentations, Riobaldo exposes the testimony of dreadful facts, experiences of the intense barbarism because of the absence of the official laws of the country. As a guarantee of making a relevant discourse, the narrator tries to rescue a certain "age of heroes" and their extraordinary achievements. In this way, the jagunços are introduced not just as brutes acting by instinct, but as individuals who have found in the fight (or war) the only possibility of expression. In a constant search for the truth of things, the narrator comes across at any moment with the duality that exists in the meanings of his world, the being and the non-being of everything, the dialectic between good and evil. This attitude is part of the formal ambiguity that runs the whole novel and culminates in an attitude that can present violence not only destructive but also revealing of human virtues. In this study I propose that violence be the structuring element of Guimarães Rosa’s novel, regarding that, since the content to the form, the images of violence give a singular force to the discourse of the work.
