| Abstract: | The establishment of pastures and plantations for feeding the world population has led to a significant loss of natural vegetation and consequent loss of ecosystem functions. With the soybean production as the main agricultural activity in Brazil and knowing that this legume is attacked by several pests, sustainable solutions for controlling the agricultural pests are highly demanded, especially those that generate a lower cost to farmers. In the present study, I investigated the interaction between the main soybean pest, the brown stink bug (Euschistus heros), and the small mammal community from native forests of the Brazilian savanna (locally known as Cerrado), with emphasis on the most abundant small mammal in these areas, the marsupial Gracilinanus agilis. I evaluated the possible dispersal of the insect to natural areas close to a soybean plantation and whether the distance between the plantation and these natural areas influences the intensity of predation upon this insect by G. agilis. I recorded fragments of the brown stink bug in the feces of three species of native small mammals, two rodents (Cerradomys scotti and Rhipidomys macrurus) and one marsupial (G. agilis), with E. heros being much more frequent in the feces of the latter. I obtained a high overlap of ẟ15N isotopic values considering brown stink bugs from three distinct sources: those collected from the feces of G. agilis individuals living in the natural forests, those captured in soybean plantation, and brown stink bugs reared in laboratory fed exclusively with soybean. This pattern indicates that brown stink bugs preyed by G. agilis dispersed from soybean plantation to natural areas. In addition, pest consumption by G. agilis in natural forest areas was inversely related to distance from the soybean plantation, but this relationship was significant only in the dry season, when there is no soybean available in the area of cultivation. This pattern suggests a dispersion of these pests in search of shelter and food in the absence of its preferred resource (soybean). The potential of G. agilis as predator of E. heros (101.8 brown stink bugs/night, evaluated with animals in captivity) and the potential value that this may represent in terms of cost reduction for farmers should be considered for management actions. Therefore, the conservation of natural areas close to the plantations represents an increase in the predation of the E. heros population that survives in the off-season period, resulting in a potential lower use of pesticides and a reduction in soil and food contamination. |
