| Abstract: | The Boundary Element Method (BEM) performs the discretization only on the boundary of the domain, which simplifies the whole process of numerical modeling of the problem, but the method presents an inconvenience when it is applied in problems of Fracture Mechanics: degeneration of the system of equations due to the presence of a crack. It is possible to overcome this difficulty with the Dual Boundary Element Method (DBEM) on the discretization of the crack, which uses two independent equations in each face of the crack that allow to solve the degeneration problem and without the necessity of remashing at each crack growth step, becoming a clear advantage over other numerical methods like the Finite Element Method in crack growth studies. The present study proposes the use of an academic software named BemCracker2D and its graphic interface named BemLab2D to simulate problems of fatigue crack growth in mixed mode (I+II). The methodology consists in construct numerical models with BemLab2D, calculate elastic stresses with the conventional BEM and then perform incremental analyses with the DBEM through the BemCracker2D. The stress intensity factors (FIT) are computed to each increment through J-integral, the crack growth direction through the maximum tangential stress criterion and the crack growth rate through a modified Paris equation, which uses an equivalent FIT considering fracture mode I and II. The results are compared with analytical equations, as well as experimental and numerical results extracted from the literature, aiming to demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency of the adopted methodology, as well as to validate the robustness of the programs. In general, the analysis programs were extremely effective, generating consistent results, even with the approximations considered in the numerical models and presenting tools that facilitate and accelerate the entire analysis process. |
