| Abstract: | The diversity of Crocodylomorpha in Brazil during the Late Cretaceous was very large, especially in the Bauru Group, located in the central portion of the country. The three taxa used in this study came from the Adamantina Formation, Bauru Group, west of the State of São Paulo. The Adamantina Formation is characterized by reddish sandstones, mudstones, and conglomerates and their rocks are interpreted as essentially fluvial deposits. All the crocodylomorphs studied here are Notosuchia, which have among their characteristics adaptations to a terrestrial life and present great ecological diversity, with some carnivorous members and probably herbivore ones. One method to better understand the biology of extinct organisms and their ecological interactions is the histological analysis of their fossils, with studies of the thin sections of their bones and teeth. By using these thin sections, it is possible to estimate the pattern of growth, the age of the specimen at death, and annual mass gain. With sections of teeth, it is possible to estimate tooth formation time and enamel thickness. To date, there were no studies that used this technique with crocodylomorphs other than Neosuchia. The three groups of Notosuchia selected for this work were: Baurusuchidae (adult and juvenile), Sphagesauridae, and Mariliasuchus. The sections of teeth showed that the formation time between the groups varies accordingly to the size of the tooth. The thicker enamels are associated with the herbivorous diet groups (Sphagesauridae and Mariliasuchus). The sections of bones showed growth patterns similar to those of extant crocodiles. Regarding the mass gain, Mariliasuchus presented an expressive mass gain, with an incremental cycle equivalent to up to 90% of the body mass and the adult Baurusuchidae showed an average increment of 25% per year, while the juvenile increased in 42%. Finally, it was possible to infer the age in years of an adult Baurusuchidae, which varied from a minimum of 8 years (Monomolecular model) and a maximum of 15 (Linear model). |
