Abstract: The aim of the study was to evaluate the reaction time in children with sickle cell anemia (SCA), using simple and choice reaction time tests, using equipment designed for this purpose. For this study 46 children were evaluated, 24 with SCA, which constituted the experimental group, and 22 with no history of the disease, which constituted the control group. All the children were aged between six and 12 years. The equipment for application of the tests were developed with Arduino, that has been programmed to generate random light stimuli, according to the purpose of each test as well as the capture of motor responses by activating the response button, transfer and registration the data on the computer via Bluetooth. The results show that there is a significant deficit in the choice reaction time tests and simple reaction time in children with SCA, they had less resistance to distraction, committing more errors by omission when compared to the control group. In choice reaction time tests there was significant difference between the type of error and between groups. We conclude that children with SCA present reduction in choice reaction time may be related to silent brain insults and lack of motor experiences throughout childhood. We believe that the use of psychometric tests can reinforce the findings and assist in further investigation of this psychomotor aspect.
