Abstract:	The evolution of articles production in Brazilian scientific periodicals in the areas of information studies, published between 1972 and 2007, is described. The areas of information studies include Archive Science, Library Science, Information Science, Documentation, and Museum Science. This work analyses especially those articles written in multiple authoring as indicator of a type of scientific collaboration. This study aims to identify factors that are present in the authorship collaboration process. It analyses, through the use of bibliometric techniques, the production of articles by type of authoring and gender. Data were obtained from a database containing 4,334 articles published in 27 Brazilian periodicals, of which 1,270 are multi-authored papers. It also investigates author's profile (occupation, affiliation, areas of bachelor, master and doctoral degrees) and types of relationships between authors from 104 randomly selected articles written by 275 authors in three periods: 1988/1989, 1996/1997 and 2005/2006. Data were processed by SPSS statistics software and is illustrated in MS Excel tables and charts. The findings are presented in seven major groups: (1) the evolution of articles production, emphasizing the increasing rates in middle 1990's; (2) the percentage evolution of articles by authorship types stressing the surpassing of historical averages of multiple authoring in 1999, reaching 47.7% in 2007; (3) the percentage evolution of articles production by gender, stressing gradual reduction of women authoring levels, especially in multi authored papers; (4) indication of increasing relationships amongst authors with academic occupations, reaching 80% in 2005/2006; (5) increasing association between authors and universities (about 80 %) especially federal and state universities (75 % in 2005/2006); (6) increasing rates of authors from Social Sciences (mainly Library and Information Science), Sciences and Engineering, and the reduction of Humanities' authors rates; (7) increasing percentage of academic relations amongst authors, 80% of the sample articles in 2005/2006, especially supervisor relations (almost 50% of articles). Contrary to expectations, there was no evidence that the increasing annual rates of multiple authoring are due to changes in authors' profiles. However, findings suggest that the increasing rates of multiple authoring noticed from the second half of 90's are associated with change types of authors' relationship, more specifically in two kinds of collaborative activities: student-supervisor, and participation in formal groups such as research, study and workgroups.
