| dc.description.abstract1 | Non-forest ecosystems, rich in biodiversity and endemic species, have been, to some extent,
neglected in terms of research and conservation when compared to the tree component of
tropical forests. Two of these ecosystems, the campo rupestre and the cerrado rupestre, occur
in the Brazilian highlands and have been used under different concepts, leading to debate
regarding their characteristics and biogeography. This review of the terms “campo rupestre”
and “cerrado rupestre” in scientific and historical literature aims to document the evolution
of their use, the different meanings in which they have been employed, and to suggest an
alternative way to clarify their usage. A scoping review, combined with a systematic review,
was conducted in the Web of Science and Google Scholar databases using a Boolean search
method, including their English equivalents (rocky fields, rocky grasslands, rupestrian
grasslands, rupestrian cerrado, and rupestrian savanna), to observe the historical evolution
of identification, characterization, and descriptors. “Cerrado rupestre” and its English
versions yielded 55 indexed results in Web of Science and 2,140 citations in Google Scholar.
“Campo rupestre” and its English versions were mentioned 1,006 times in Web of Science
and 15,500 times in Google Scholar. The Web of Science search was refined by geographic
restriction, subject filtering by topic, and by fields of knowledge, with a focus on Ecology
and Biodiversity within Plant Sciences. The Google Scholar platform was used as a
supplementary source of non-indexed texts and publications, which proved relevant to the
historical and conceptual development of both terms. Additional items were suggested by
experts to supplement the final lists provided. A selection of publications is presented that
document the history of the classification of open, herbaceous-shrubby upland vegetation in
Brazil during the 19th and 20th centuries, with an emphasis on the campo rupestre, along with
a post-2000 analysis of the most relevant items that demonstrate different conceptions and
delimitations of the terms campo rupestre and cerrado rupestre. The cerrado rupestre
proved to be much less frequent in the literature, and its history and conceptualization were
traced from the late 20th century to the present day. We selected 27 relevant texts for each
term to develop our discussions. The terminology for campo rupestre is discussed in light of

its altitudinal range and geographic coverage, the concept of peinobiomes, the application of
Ocbil’s theory, and a proposal to use broader (lato sensu) and more restricted (stricto sensu)
qualifiers for this term. The cerrado rupestre, defined as a savannic plant physiognomy
associated with rock outcrops, is not defined by the altitude, with studies concentrated in
Central-Western Brazil. Basic research, combined with ecological and conservation
programs, is still needed to inform and consolidate effective public policies in prioritizing
these unique environment. | pt_BR |
