| Abstract: | The Aedes aegypti mosquito is the main vector of viral diseases such as dengue, zika and chikungunya, and yellow fever, a mosquito species responsible for significant epidemics in recent years and of great medical importance. The harmful effects of synthetic insecticides are already known, so there is a need for new natural and biodegradable alternatives. In addition, resistance is another negative factor, unlike bioinsecticides, which because they cover a range of botanical compounds, there is little possibility of mosquitoes showing resistance. Essential oils (EOs) are a collection of organic compounds from a single plant species composed of volatile molecules. Usually toxic to humans at relatively high doses, they have demonstrated repellent activity against many mosquito species, but there are few studies evaluating the larvicidal potential of species grown in the cerrado against Ae. aegypti larvae. In this study, 9 EOs derived from 6 plant species and their main components were selected for their larvicidal properties against Ae. aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae). The objective of this study was to evaluate the larvicidal activity of different EOs from native and cultivated plants of the Brazilian Cerrado against Ae. aegypti mosquito larvae. Essential oil was extracted by hydrodistillation. The yield was calculated based on fresh leaf weight. EOs were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and the larvicidal activity against Ae. aegypti larvae at the third stage of development evaluated. EOs of Alpinia zerumbet (Pers.) B. L. Burtt & R. M. Sm., Baccharis retusa DC., Blepharocalyx salicifolius (Kunth) O. Berg, Cymbopogon densiflorus (Steud.) Stapf, Eugenia langsdorffii O. Berg. and Myracrodruon urundeuva Allemão were tested. Of the species evaluated in the screening, the most potent EOs samples were from the leaves of A. zerumbet and E. langsdorffii. EOs from these two species were then tested at concentrations ranging from 2.5 to 100mg/L. The major components of the EOs were identified and quantified by gas chromatography. In A. zerumbet species, the majority compounds identified were 1,8-cineole, sabinene, terpinen-4-ol and γ-terpinene and in E. langsdorffii, limoneno, δ-cadinol, β-mircee and espatulenol. Lethal concentrations of the EOs of A. zerumbet were (CL50 = 36,644mg/L; CL90 = 66,318 mg/L) and for E. langsdorffii (CL50 = 53,522mg/L; CL90 = 103,932mg/L). Essential oils of A. zerumbet and E. langsdorffii species showed excellent larvicidal potential against Ae. aegypti species, which may represent an ecological and sustainable alternative in controlling the larvae of the species. However, the active components still need to be identified, as well as a clarification of their mode of action. |
