Abstract: Introduction: Birth Centers, in Brazil also called Birth Houses, are health institutions in which obstetric nurses or midwives provide assistance during labor and delivery of normal-risk pregnant women. They constitute an alternative to hospital care models, traditionally based on the technocratic model of childbirth care. In this environment, family integration around birth, breastfeeding and the bond of affection between mother, father and baby are encouraged; they consider childbirth as a physiological process and the adopt practices based on scientific evidence. Currently, they are strategic units in Public Policies for the implementation of a change in the care model and qualification of obstetric care. However, despite the incentives, the implementation of new Birth Centers in Brazil is still a challenge due to resistance and distrust regarding the quality and safety of care, when compared to medical and technological resources. Objective: to characterize the assistance provided in Birth Centers in Brazil through the assistance results in transfers and the users' perception of their care. The dissertation was structured in 2 articles. Article 1: An integrative literature review was carried out with the objective of understanding the satisfaction of postpartum women with the assistance provided in Birth Centers in Brazil through the guiding question: “What is the satisfaction of Brazilian puerperal women with the assistance provided in Birth Centers?". Method: Articles were searched in the Pubmed, LILACS and SciELO electronic journals databases. After full reading, a sample of 18 original articles was obtained. Results:The mothers' satisfaction with the care received was unanimous. The following stand out: the one-on-one assistance, the use of non-pharmacological pain relief measures during labor, the care and affection of the team, the presence of a companion and the welcoming environment make up the entire project that aims to make the Birth Centers a place to welcome parturients. Conclusions and implications for practice: There is evidence about the satisfaction of postpartum women and the need for expansion and dissemination of Birth Centers. Therefore, it is necessary to change the cultural paradigm, in the sense of breaking the hegemonic hospital-centered model in the care of pregnant women at usual risk. Article 2: The second article aimed to describe the outcomes of maternal transfers from a Birth Center to their referral hospital. Method: This is a cross-sectional, retrospective study carried out at oneCentro de Parto Normal from January 2014 to January 2015. The sample consisted of 61 women who underwent transfer. Results: The transfer rate was 11.8%. The main causes of transfer were the failure of labor progress and changes in fetal heart rate. Maternal and neonatal outcomes were favorable, with a low rate of complications and a cesarean section rate of 3.5% of women admitted to the Delivery Center; there were no records of deaths or ICU admissions. Conclusion: the Birth Center had good outcomes after maternal transfers to the reference hospital. The profile of the population served, the location of the Birthing Centerin relation to its reference hospital and the admission criteria can influence transfer rates. Conclusion of the dissertation: Birth Centers are presented as a safe care model and have low transfer rates and good outcomes after maternal transfers to the referral hospital. The profile of the population served, the location of the Birth Center in relation to its reference hospital and the admission criteria can influence transfer rates. Remote clinical case discussion via videoconference could help decisions about transfer to distant health units. There is evidence and sensitive data on the satisfaction of postpartum women with care at the Birth Centers, that provide women a positive experience, mainly regarding the “satisfaction with humanity” of professionals. The following stand out: nurse-patient communication, one to-one assistance, continuity of care, the use of pain relief measures during labor, the attention and affection of the team, the presence of a companion during labor and the welcoming and differentiated environment that make the Brith Centers a place where parturients are welcomed.
