Abstract: Between August/1989 and July/1990, some aspects of the ecology and behavior of a troop of howler monkeys Alouatta caraya Humboldt, 1812, whose composition oscilated from 15 to 17 individuais were studied in a seminatural forest (29°37'S, 56°17'W) located in a cattle farm, Estância Casa Branca, Alegrete, Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil. By the instantaneous scan sampling were collected 37,855 behavioral records distributed in 2,980 samples, totalizing 745 entire hours of direct contact with the animals. The "ad libitum" sampling was applied, too. The group spend an average of 62% of their daylight time resting, 18% moving, 16% feeding and 5% in social interactions. Peaks of ocurrence of the resting and feeding activities were observed along the day. The comparison of the patterns of daily activities among the different age classes indicate that as older an individual is, it rests more and moves less. Non-adults, especially juveniles and infants, spent more time than others in social interactions, mainly play. Twenty-seven plant species were used as food sources. The howlers spent an average of 61% of their feeding time eating leaves and petioles, 6% green stems, 1% barks, 29% fruits and seeds and 3% flowers. The diet composition changed monthly in response to the seasonal availability of some food items. The composition of the agesex classes diet was similar. The group utilized an average of 7.7 plant species per day (5.3 sources of leaves and petioles, 2.5 of fruits and seeds and 0.5 of flowers), ranging from 4 to 13 species/day. Leguminosae was the more exploited family as food source. The siting posture was used in 62% of the feeding records. A thermoregulatory behavior was observed with the utilization of different body postures related to the ambient temperature during resting. Alouatta caraya is tipically a quadruped, walking in 66% of the locomotion records. The group used the two availables hectares of the forest. The core area comprised 0.16 ha, which were utilized for at least 70% of the behavioral sampling days. The different utilization of the several forest portions is explained by the food resources density. The black howlers moved an average of 454 meters per day (ranging from 156 to 893 m/day), of which, about 408 m were in the trees and 46 m, on the ground. The sleeping trees presents, in its great majority, had diameter at breast height > 40 cm.
