Abstract:	Brazil has undertaken a voluntary commitment to reduce emissions, as part of the National Policy on Climate Change, but adaptation and mitigation measures for urban areas are still lacking. In this context, the present study aims to explore the urban thermal environment of Brasilia, Brazil. The city was inaugurated in 1960 and its Pilot Plan is an UNESCO World Heritage site designed by Lucio Costa based on principles of modernist movement. The research method consisted of on-site visits, automobile traverses and thermal imaging used to compare urban areas in the Pilot Plan with the same built type characteristic of open arrangement of midrise buildings (LCZ 5). During the observation period, the results suggested the temperatures values are strongly dependents to direct solar radiation and due to urban materials and presence or absence of shading. The near surface air temperature peaked around 4° C in the morning and afternoon traverse. With an emphasis on urban consolidation polices, the role of the open space should be made effective towards mitigating urban heat effect in order to be incorporated in urban planning for more comfortable and livable spaces for inhabitants.
