Abstract: The light comfort conditions reveal points to be considered in the development of the architectural design of residential environments, especially when these start to receive work and study activities - home offices. This new concern was mainly driven by the Covid-19 pandemic, which forced us to rethink how residential buildings are used in relation to the visual environment. The objective of this dissertation is to investigate the lighting conditions in the home office and its possible potential for a suitable visual environment for users - students and professionals. The dissertation falls within the scope of Subtask A: “User perspective and requirements”, of the International Energy Agency IEA SHC Task 61/EBC Annex 77 “Integrated Solutions for Daylighting and Electric Lighting”. The research method consisted of the application of a questionnaire, content analysis through an open question and analysis of photographs taken by the participants. The questionnaire was applied online and aimed at professionals and students working from home from November 2020 to March 2021. It has six sections: general information about the participants; satisfaction with natural and artificial lighting and external views; assessment of the visual environment through the lighting quality descriptors; home office photos; additional information about the job; and finally, activities and duration of the home office, and characteristics of the environment. 192 responses were received – 97 from professionals and 95 from students –, data analysis was performed using descriptive statistics and open-ended responses were qualitatively analyzed by the Nvivo software. As a result, it was possible to identify the perception and level of user satisfaction. Overall, 48.5% of professionals are satisfied with the visual environment in their home office and 42.4% intend to continue in their home office after the pandemic. Among students, 44.3% of them are satisfied with the visual environment, but only 32% intend to continue in their home office. It was concluded that the lighting conditions within different latitude bands varied mainly due to the difference in locations with greater or lesser cloudiness. This situation possibly impacted the user's perception, identifying high levels of lighting, color perception of natural surfaces and hard shadows in regions with less cloudiness - higher latitude ranges. According to user preferences and the performance of lighting in the home office, environments with a work area relatively close to the window, and the lighting of a ceiling lamp or combined with a table lamp when there is no natural light.
