| Abstract: | With this thesis I aim to investigate the lifestyles of a group of children, aged between eight and twelve, from inner city of Distrito Federal, Brazil. Considering lifestyles based on Pierre Bourdieu (1983, 2008) as activities, actions and properties arising from the "habitus" that result in a certain unity of social practices with generative principles that are eminently collective, I aim through qualitative methods carried out with children’s participants of an NGO located in a slum area, investigate significant dimensions and episodes of their lives, in order to compose profiles and episodes of sociological revelance (SOUZA, 2012; 2018; BOURDIEU, 2012) about them. Therefore, I begin by dealing with how the concept of lifestyles is to a large extent related to the concept of social class in relational sociology, to later address the idea of popular classes and their principle of "necessity" as taste and virtue as a generator of social practices, an after that seek to contextualize the concept of popular classes in Brazil from two relevant authors in the academic debate about these discussions: Claudia Fonseca (2002, 2004) by the cultural approach regarding the lives of popular classes in Brazil; and Jessé Souza's (2018) “structural scum”. Such discussions are proceeded by analyzes about the schooling of children from popular classes and by investigations about different dimensions of their social life, inspired by life trajectory methodologies of relational sociology, but carried out in the present time. In the methodologic chapter, I address the characteristics of Terra Molhada (Wet Land) location and continue by describing the five children participating in the research. The analysis proposal is the construction of children’s profiles based on participatory observation from data collected from visits to homes, walks through the territory, participation in NGO activities and information obtained through dialogues with family members and NGO volunteers. The portraits, in addition to a detailed presentation of the children, deal with three dimensions: school relationships; family and sociability relations; and relation on the NGO. In addition, contains the description of significant episodes for the understanding of the children's lifestyle and dispositions. Finally, the work adds a comparative chapter in order to understand the differences between the five children in the three mentioned above dimension. In conclusion, I emphasize the potential that participatory research with children and use of different sources and methodologies brings the possibility of telling their stories in the best possible way. |
