| Abstract: | This research aims at analysing discourses which grant a diasporic identity to samba (samba music herein), marked by its ties established with one Africa that exists and resists in its musical, historical, social and cultural dimensions. Committed to the decolonization of knowledge and having interdisciplinarity as its guiding principle, it adopts the Latin-American perspective of decoloniality and afrodiasporic thinking as its theoretical referentiality. Recognizing that every knowledge is epistemically situated, sambistas (samba composers herein), the enunciators of the analysed discourses, are privileged voices within this investigation, whose narrative is constructed from the structural place they occupy in the history of samba. Having samba as object and source of research, it makes use of procedures from the Analysis of Discourse, by seeking to understand the constructed meanings in its analysed discourses. The corpus of the research was constituted by studies on samba, depositions by sambistas, and the lyrics of their songs, selected from the pluriverse of the urban samba of Rio de Janeiro. Prioritizing a set of self-referenced samba songs (meta-sambas), it investigates how the restitution of Brazil/Africa “links”, the evocation of africanities and their African “roots” evince resistance strategies to the deafricanization of samba. The musical production by Martinho da Vila, as well as his personal and artistic trajectory, stands centrally within this research. The sambista performs a singular role in the history of samba, by establishing its connections with Africa (especially Angola), with its ancestry, and by harboring in his songs africanities which reveal a diasporic identity of samba. Discoursively constructed, such identity is tied to one Africa which resists in samba, since its most remote origins, gaining evidence from the 1970s, a context marked by identity disputes, by the strengthening of the black movement, and by the valuing of African-Brazilian culture in Brazil. |
