Abstract:	This dissertation presents research on the transformations of the care of terminally ill patients in the second half of the twentieth century. More specifically, we analyse two modalities of care for people with terminal diagnoses that emerged in that period proposing the acceptance of dying as a better way to live with dignity until death, aside from criticising hospital carelessness with patients in this condition. These modalities of work were developed by Cicely Saunders and Elizabeth Kubler-Ross, two doctors who worked in England and the United States, respectively. Many aspects of their works were gathered afterwards, with the creation of the palliative care specialty. The objective of this dissertation is to analyse the constitution of these new lines of work, interpreting the heritage and foundations that led to their creations and disseminations. The biographical approach was chosen to be the conducting thread of this analysis. From the biographies and through the methodological approach used in the field of Clinical Sociology, we weave together the personal trajectories of these pioneering women and the social trajectory of the period in which their work arose. Observing the biographies of both these women and the social trajectory of Europe and the U.S after World War II, it was possible to identify some of the main characteristics in the creation of this new line of care for terminally ill patients. We emphasize the transversal presence of an egalitarian and democratic ethics in the work of the authors, which makes itself present in their conceptions of care for terminally ill patients. Observing the social context of Europe in the post-war period and the constitution of welfare states and wage societies, we understand how the pioneering work of palliative care arose and flourished in a social context of democratic solidarity.
