Abstract:	The present dissertation analyses Phaedrus’s mention to Alceste in his praise of Eros, in Plato’s Symposium. The study takes into consideration gender issues inherent to that speech. For this purpose, the study applies Scott’s (1986) approach to gender as a category of historical analysis. The first chapter provides a brief introduction to the Platonic Symposium, pointing out that the prologue sheds light from the beginning on one of the dialogue’s objectives: to be one more apology to Socrates. This apology is based on a reframe of the relationship between Socrates and Alcibiades, as it is built around the articulation of a gender rhetoric, focused on Alcibiades' sexual paranomia and the political intervention on Socrates' memory (Cornelli 2013), which had been condemned to death. One reason was precisely the reference to Alcibiades, as a problematic character. Both dimensions, gender and power are present throughout the entire platonic dialogue. Then, the chapter approaches two interpretative questions, preliminary to the study of the Symposium: the ordering of the Platonic corpus and the internal relationship among the text’s parts. The second chapter analyses a commented translation of Phaedrus' speech, focusing on the presence of Alceste in the text. The third chapter describes the instruments proposed by Scott for the use of gender as a category of historical analysis. This category is used to finally understand what this particular woman, Alceste, is doing there. In addition to seek an approximation to the figure of Alceste in Plato's philosophy, this dissertation ends up marking a hermeneutical and political point that surpasses the immediate object of the research: any historical, philosophical or philological study of Antiquity ignoring the gender dimension it will tend to incur int the same mistakes of much reception of the figure of Alceste in Plato's Symposium.
