Abstract:	The present study aimed to verify the relationship between the use of antidumping and the impacts of innovations in protected companies. To that end, factors were established for innovation in protected industries – protection, investments in Research & Development, adoption of technologies, performance and government support –, evaluating the impacts of innovations in terms of market, product, productivity, production and environmental issues. In addition, investments in Research & Development and the level of employment in protected and unprotected industries were compared, in addition to identified innovation patterns in protected industries. As methodological biases, qualitative and quantitative (mixed) approaches were promoted based on: Comparative Qualitative Analysis in indicating the impact of innovations; non- parametric test in relation to the quantitative data of expenditure on Research & Development and employment; and, cluster analysis technique, in order to investigate innovation patterns in protected industries. The data sources used were from the Industrial Research: technological innovation – year 2014 – of the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics and the data on commercial defense linked to the Ministry of Economy. The global sample totaled 146 companies in 25 groups based on the corresponding sector, 10 of which are unprotected and 15 are protected. Among the main results, it was found that the presence of protection had impacts of innovation in opening markets, in production flexibility and in the reduction of production costs. In terms of expenditure on Research & Development, it was possible to observe that protected companies have higher investments in Research & Development than unprotected companies with impacts on the reduction of production costs. In the meantime, the adoption of technologies had an impact on the reduction of technological gaps in protected industries in the expansion of the companies' product mix. And yet, the performance factor was an important influencer in the innovation of companies with an impact on the market and also in product improvement, while another effect identified here was the use of protection in counterpoint to low performance. Government support was not associated with protection in explaining the other effects of innovation, delimiting a possible use of government incentives as an alternative to protection. In relation to employment, it was found that protected companies do not have a larger number of people than those that are not protected - which can be justified by protected companies being capital intensive. And with regard to innovation patterns, two clusters were observed, with the prevalence of unprotected groups in the most innovative cluster, while the presence of protected groups was relevant in the less innovative cluster.
