| Abstract: | Background: Children are exposed to several risk factors and may suffer Traumatic Dental Injuries (TDI). TDI can lead to pain, loss of function and aesthetic problems, with physical, emotional and social consequences. Studies that investigate the relationship between TDI with Oral Health-Related Quality of Life (OHRQoL) have no in Distrito Federal (DF), Brazil. It is important for development of health promotion strategies to holistic treatment that include not only clinical aspects but also psychosocial plan. Aims: To evaluate the prevalence and impact of TDI on OHRQoL among children between 11-14 years old enrolled in elementary school at public schools from Regional Teaching Coordination of Plano Piloto, Brasília-DF, Brazil. Methods: Eight public schools and at least 100 schoolchildren from each of them were randomly selected. Clinical examinations were performed on permanent anterior teeth for the diagnosis of TDI based on O'Brien’s classification. The Child Perceptions Questionnaire from 11 to 14 years old (CPQ11–14) was employed to evaluate the impact of TDI on OHRQoL. Schoolchildren were arranged in groups according to treatment and severity of TDI. SAS 9.3 and STATA softwares were used for statistical analysis that involved logistic regression to assess the association between schoolchildren with TDI or not with impact on OHRQoL. Confounding variables were controlled. This cross-sectional study was approved by the Human Research Ethics Committee of the Faculty of Health Sciences of the University of Brasilia (UnB). Results: The prevalence of TDI was 20.24% among total of 914 schoolchildren examined. 20% of children that exhibited some type of trauma had treated TDI and 80% of them TDI untreated. The total mean CPQ11-14 of all schoolchildren in the sample was 12.5. Statistically significant associations were found between groups with TDI, treated or not, and the control for CPQ11-14, as well as for Emotional Wellbeing (BE) domain. Group with TD treated was different from the other schoolchildren about to Social Wellbeing (BS) domain. Had significant differences between severity of TDI and CPQ11-14, BE and BS, when evaluating children with TD beyond enamel in relation to other schoolchildren. Conclusion: The prevalence of TDI was high. Treatment did not totally eliminate sequelae of TDI regarding OHRQoL. Schoolchildren with TDI - whether treated or not - suffered a greater impact on OHRQoL and feelings and emotions, when compared to those without TD. Treated TD group, in which some schoolchildren had injuries with pulp exposure and missing teeth due to trauma, had more adverse effects on leisure time activities and in the company of other people than other children. Schoolchildren with TD of extension beyond enamel had more negative experiences in OHRQoL, in the emotional and social state, having as parameters the other groups about severity of TDI. However, many questions about the assessment of the impact of TDI on OHRQoL can still be understood on next studies. |
