| Abstract: | Objective: the objective of this study is to investigate the relationship between maternal glycated hemoglobin level in non-diabetic women and birth weight. Method: the cross-sectional study, developed in three municipalities in the Northeast, involving mothers of live newborns. The data collection period occurred between March 2011 and January 2012. The level of maternal glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) was considered as exposure and birth weight as the outcome studied. The linearity between the exposure and the outcome was verified. The collinearity between the dependent variables was also evaluated using the polyclonal correlation matrix and the multiple linear regression was used with hierarchical levels of covariates. Results: in the crude linear regression analysis, it was evidenced that, for each percentage of glycated hemoglobin, there was an increase of 132.84 grams, these values remained statistically significant after the regression adjusted for covariates considered in the hierarchical model, and in the final model for each percentage unit of glycated hemoglobin the increase in newborn weight was 164.84g. Conclusion: high levels of maternal glycated hemoglobin increase the weight of the newborn and can be used as a prognostic indicator in pregnancy, evidencing the need for greater monitoring of this variable in pregnant women. |
