Abstract:	The present work is an unfolding of the research carried out by the Research Group on Dual Career Sports (DuCa) on the conciliation of sports and studies by high performance athletes. This theme is constantly addressed in the international academic literature, but in Brazil it is still in progress. In both scenarios the researches present the athlete's need to dedicate themselves to sports and studies, motivated by the short trajectory of the sports career compared to other professional choices and the mishaps that may arise during its development, leading to the search for positions in the sports formal work market according to their current level of education. In addition, the important role of the family in the dual career is evidenced in most of the studies, acting as one of the main responsible for giving opportunities and financing the sports practice of their children. To overcome barriers they’ll face throughout their lives, athletes rely on facilitators who support them in this regard, such as the emotional and financial support of their family, coaches and other social agents, and even government aid programs, policies and institutions of sports and studies. One of the possible facilitators instituted in Brazil is the Bolsa-Atleta Program of the Federal District (PBA-DF), which financially aids athletes according to their sports results. The main objective of this work was to analyze the dual career of the elite athletes of the Federal District when conciliating the high performance sport and the educational formation, using the PBA/DF as a criterion of identification the elite athletes of the Federal District. The research was organized in three different works. The first involved a review of the international literature to identify and analyze the progress of university student-athlete studies. The second sought to outline an initial profile of the athletes benefiting from the PBA/DF in the period of 2014/2015 with data collected through a structured questionnaire. Finally, the third study aimed to understand the dual career trajectory of elite athletes in the Federal District, considering the barriers and facilitators they possessed and the impact of PBA/DF on their sporting development. We realized that the non-spectacularized sport practiced by the sample’s athletes offers few opportunities for financial return, making them focus on their studies due to the belief that it’s a more reliable way to obtain their livelihood. The family appears as important influencers to both sports and studies, even though the practice of sports has always been related to good results in school. We also considered the effectiveness of the PBA/DF as a program able to offer conditions for full-time dedication to sports, and we suggest points to be taken into consideration to benefit the athlete besides the financial aid.
