| Abstract: | Knowledge networks can be understood as social groups that interact with each other and generate diverse knowledge flows. In the light of this understanding, the present thesis aimed to determine the influence of the institutional environment management on networks of knowledge performance. To achieve this purpose, a theoretical scope was developed, covering the following themes: institutionalism and its variations, networks, research groups and governance. As for the methodological aspects, a qualitative and quantitative research of descriptive and explicative character was carried out. The study subjects were the members of 15 research groups, nine of them in Brazil (Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, Paraná, São Paulo, Goiás, Paraíba and Brasília) and six in European territory, five in Spain (Alicante, Valencia and Castellon de la Plana and Barcelona) and a researcher linked to the University of Bologna (Bologna / Italy). The analysis techniques used were Sociometry, Fuzzy Set QCA and Content Analysis. Sociometry described cases profile, in which were observed issues related to density, size, number of interactions, actor with higher degree and centrality of proximity. The Fuzzy Set QCA analysis allowed the construction of a model of necessity and sufficiency to achieve a more satisfactory than unsatisfactory performance. Finally, Content Analysis was used as a complementary method and allowed studies on governance and group management, as well as on the practices adopted. Data were collected through face-to-face interviews and via teleconference, as well as with the use of questionnaires. In addition, secondary data were collected on the CNPQ platform and on official websites. The results obtained generated five propositions, which were: P1 - Geographically dispersed knowledge network members have a lower level of research participation than the agglomerated members; P2 - The research and business networks are institutionally similar, considering the results of dispersion or agglomeration of its members, the existence of coopetition and the possibility of orbital structuring; P3 - Governance practices in research groups are indirect and not formalized; P4 - The sharing of ideals of what science means is a necessary criterion for achieving satisfactory performance in research groups; P5 - The variables "Trust", "Co-authoring", "Ideals" and "Internal and external interactions" contribute to the good performance of the groups. In addition to these, other results from the thesis can be observed, such as: in Brazilian research groups, the main issues that impact their performance are subjective; the presence of a formal and systematic intergroup relationship was not perceived; the Brazilian research groups do not use formal norms to deliberate non-routine procedures; in the Spanish research groups, the system of career progression and access to resources play main impact of performance. As for public policies, we observed that the form of research in Brazil occurs mostly in the network. This implies that actions that foster transactions between groups and institutions of higher education should be stimulated by regulatory or support agencies. In spite of the limitations of the work, we believe that this study is relevant to several academic areas, especially to the study of networks of knowledge generated through research groups. |
