Abstract:	In recent years, retirement has become a major theme in career planning. If, on the one hand, it is seen as a period of rest and enjoyment gained by the worker, on the other, it has a connotation of unproductivity and worthlessness. The aim of this research was to discuss the processes of meaning attribution and their importance in social life as predictors of positive or negative experiences of retirement. To accomplish that, a questionnaire was applied with four questions that covered meanings, feelings and attitudes regarding retirement. A categorical thematic analysis of the responses was conducted, and the results found served as a basis for the construction of the Meaning of Retirement Scale. The proposed scale was applied in a sample of 275 workers. The results indicate a negative meaning attribution to the phenomenon of retirement (M = 3.32, SD = 0.25) and reveal the paradox that is the phenomenon of retirement: there is a general positive expectation about retirement (Factor 1 - General Expectation of Retirement: M = 3.59, SD = 0.27) and an idea of freedom associated to the fact (Factor 3 - Regulation and Self-efficacy: M = 3.7, SD = 0.48); On the other hand, workers report experiences of anguish and insecurity (Factor 2 - Mental Health and Self-care: M = 2.99, SD = 0.76) and recognize the negative impact of the change of social role with retirement (Factor 4 - Insertion and Social Recognition: M = 3; SD = 0.5). These experiences of anxiety perceived in the evaluations of Factors 2 and 4 can also be a harbinger of retirement anxiety. The negative evaluation of these factors, as well as the general negative evaluation of the meaning of retirement, lead us back to one of the initial discussions of the present study: the construction and strengthening of negative meanings in the working population today can generate a population marked by bad experiences of retirement in the future.
