| Abstract: | In Criminalistics, biometric forensic applications are related to problems of source or origin determination (confrontation between standard and questioned material). These tests are based on unique traditional biometric traits (DNA, handwriting, voice, face, among others). Biometric identifiers have different degrees of distinction or may not be sufficiently obvious or available, in order to limit or even render unfeasible the forensic expert report. Although soft biometric traits (gender, height, ethnicity, etc.) are not as permanent and reliable as traditional ones, they complement the individual's information, increasing the accuracy in establishing his/her identity. This work proposes a forensic methodology of semi-automatic human height estimation in videos of surveillance systems for Criminalistics, whose methods currently used to estimate height are restricted to the reverse projection (characterized by subjectivity) and single-image based photogrammetry techniques (dependent on structured scenes). The proposed methodology was submitted to experiments in real conditions, with cameras of different brands, models and configurations. Adverse situations, such as a large distance from the target to the cameras, poor video quality, uneven or irregular floors, presence of noise in the video frames were also considered. The results of height estimates of the targets presented an absolute mean error of 0.013 m in relation to the validation data, which demonstrates the robustness of the solution for the forensic use. |
