| Abstract: | The main urban spot of the Distrito Federal is located in the watershed of Paranoá Lake, where the Riacho Fundo hydrographic unit stands out, which is therefore the main source of pollutants that flows into the lake. Thus, the branch Riacho Fundo, river mouth of this hydrographic unit, is characterized by a marked sedimentation and presents high eutrophication rates, for example the cyanobacteria proliferation occurred at the beginning of the rainy season in December 2016. In this context, it is important to understand the geochemistry of the water-sediment interface, since the sediments can perform different functions depending on the biophysical-chemical conditions of the environment. Thus, this research has as main objective the study of interstitial water and sediments profiles deposited in the Riacho Fundo branch of Paranoá Lake with a view to its sedimentological, geochemical and mineralogical characterization and its relation with the main sources of pollution. For that, field campaigns were carried out to collect samples of surface water, interstitial water and sediment at strategically distributed points in relation to the main sources of pollution, such as the Sewage Treatment Station (ETE-Sul) and the river mouth. The profiles were collected in polycarbonate tubes with a thickness of approximately 25 cm of sediment; in the laboratory, were layered and centrifuged for separation of solid and liquid phases. The sediment samples underwent alkaline fusion and sequential extraction (BCR protocol). The samples of the liquid phase - solutions of the chemical extractions (total and partial), surface waters and interstitial waters - were analyzed by several equipment (AAS, ICP-OES, ICP-MS and CI), in order to obtain larger elements (cations and anions), trace elements and rare earth elements. It was also determined the mineralogical composition of the lake sediment samples and soils collected in the Riacho Fundo hydrographic unit by X-Ray Diffraction in the total and clay fractions. The main results were: (1) The hydrographic unit of Riacho Fundo as the main contributor of suspended material and particulate organic carbon. (2) The ETE-Sul as the main contributor of nutrients and organic matter in sediments and surface water. In addition, in relation to the points studied in this work, the surface waters near the ETE-Sul are richer in Na, K, NO3-, Cl-, P, S, SO42-, Mn, Pb, Cu, V and Gd. (3) Sediments show association of metals (Cr, Mn, Cu, Zn and Pb) with organic compounds and oxy-hydroxides of Fe and Mn, which may contribute to their mobility during the degradation of organic matter. (4) In general, in the sediments the correlation of Ca2+, Mg2+, Sr2+ and Ba2+ has shown that these elements are associated with carbonates introduced by anthropic activities (mainly civil construction), since the geology of the basin does not contain rocks with carbonaceous minerals. (5) In the interstitial waters, the most representative elements with respect to the mobilization and flows between the sediments and the water column are nutrients P, S, N; and elements Ca, Mg, Sr, Ba, Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, which has as main reason the early diagenesis (oxidation of organic matter, denitrification, reductive dissolution of Mn and Fe oxides and reduction of SO4) and dissolution of carbonates. In the sediment-water interface there are fluxes for the water column of Mn, Fe, Ca, Mg, P and inversely of NO3- and SO42-. |
