Abstract:	An investigation is a process (succession of human actions) through which the Police seeks authorship and materiality, gathering evidence of a crime for criminal prosecution. In this study, police investigation is analyzed as a modality of work. Human actions in the workplace, at a time when political expression is rare, are an important subject of social research. The workplace has become a main stage for relationships of friendship and solidarity, in which the individual expresses themselves and where they interact and receive validation by others. To describe the formal and look for the hidden, the real work, in order to grasp the nature of the investigative work at the Federal Police, was the final objective of this research. The study goes from questioning the extent of police discretion in the organization to inquiring about recognition in relationships between individuals. The methodological choice was the qualitative analysis of the speech of police officers obtained in semi-structured open interviews. When investigating individual choices as a relevant factor in the decision-making process during investigations, the research intersects the topic of satisfaction in work, as subjectivity is studied as a source of contentment and achievement in workplaces. The interviews revealed the dual nature of the investigative work at the Federal Police: there is a dull, routine and bureaucratic work engaged to solve everyday inquiries – which runs in a less reflective environment, with controlled subjectivities, where neither delegates nor agents seem to enjoy their roles. There is, moreover, the work in police operations, expression of what those assimilated as an ideal investigation - for which converges time, resources and administrative interest, allowing interaction and increased reflectivity. In police investigations of such a kind, both delegates and agents exercise the discretion. The result of this study contributes to the debate concerning investigative work, between the routine and the exceptional, and to inquire on what extent the mismatch between the aspirations of police officers and their reality may hinder this work.
