Abstract:	The dissertation entitled The Paternal Metaphor in a Hamlet's psychoanalytic reading belongs to the line of research "Psychoanalysis, subjectivity and Cultureby the Graduate Program in Clinical Psychology' and Culture of the University of Brasilia (UNB). The research takes as basis the Freudian articulation between psychoanalysis and literature. Especially the Oedipus play. by Sophocles and Hamlet. by Shakespeare. This theoretical and bibliographic research is mostly inserted into the teachings of Jacques Lacan from 1950 to 1960. By reading Hamlet, the goal is to illustrate the lacanian concept of paternal metaphor as the symbolic function fulfilled by the signifier of the father, defined in this piece since the first logical time of the Oedipus complex. In order to reach this goal, is presented an assessment of the play by the extent of its five acts. Bordered by Hamlet's encounter with the ghost of his dead father: the dialogue between the protagonist and the other characters about the assumption of their respective paternal heritage; the difficulty of his untie to the betrayal intrigue relegated to his mother, thereafter transferred to Ophelia, and faces death in its relevance for the compliance of the act which responses for his desire. In terms of structuring the function of the subject's desires, shows the difference between the real father, as the carrier of the significant phallus, in opposition to the symbolic function of the significant Name-of-the-father. This paper discuss the metaphorization function that the signifier Name- of-the-father carries enabling the articulation of the signifying chain, the subject and the function of the desire. At a second stage, it presents the concept of identification grounded by the function of the image and by the mediation of the imaginary other's object and by the symbolic Other's one. It indicate the signifier Name-of-the-father prohibition and the identification with the real father as the one who has the phallus. It is concluded that the approach by the concept of paternal function is one of the possible topics to be addressed along with Hamlet's play, whose richness and complexity in problematizing human desire favors numerous connections.
