Abstract: The Savanna is the main vegetation in Central Brazil, covering approximately 23% of the national territory. It is formed by a mosaic of different physiognomies that have a typical phenology. In this context, the MODIS data provide daily measurements well suited to monitor the seasonal phenology of vegetation. The present work aims to evaluate the advantages of the temporal signatures to detect Brazilian Savanna vegetation types in the Formosa Military Field. The methodology may be divided into the following steps: (a) elaboration of the temporal cube of NDVI from temporal MODIS images; (b) noise elimination from the combination of two methods moving median filter and Minimum Noise Fraction (MNF) transformation, and (c) classification using the Spectral Correlation Mapper (SCM) and Minimum Euclidean Distance. The results demonstrate that savanna physiognomies present typical temporal signatures: (a) Grassland, with predominance of herbaceous; (b) Savanna Sensu Stricto, shrubs formation; and (c) Forest, covered by trees. Savanna Sensu Stricto was subdivided in the sparse and typical Savanna, based on the trees cover density. The forest formation showed highest NDVI values and the lowest variation between seasons, due to its association with the water. On the other hand, the grassland showed lowest NDVI values and the highest variation, and higher frequency and intensity of fire should be observed in this layer. The methodology was efficient in the noise removal in the NDVI timeseries, becoming useful in differentiating the amount of vegetation types. Both spectral classifications separated the areas of the lake, cleared area, and gallery forests. However, differences in scores are present in areas of savannas and grassland. Due to temporal spectra characteristics, the Minimum Euclidean Distance method allowed better differentiation of the physiognomies, while the SCM highlighted the features on the fire events. The methodology efficiency has been proved for regional delimitation of savanna physiognomies even considering the low spatial resolution MODIS sensor, and consequently high spectral mixture.
