Abstract:	The Water is an indispensable resource for the survival of all species and exerts a decisive influence in the population’s life quality. However, the way that the water resources are used and managed has led to a level of environmental degradation and a risk of scarcity of water which compromises the life quality and the future generations. To manage water resources is not an easy task, since it involves social, economic, political and environmental conflicts. To measure the sustainability of some region, it is critical that the decision-makers have access to good indicators. The aim of this work is the composition of a sustainability index of watersheds (SIW), which subsidize the decision-makers the adoption of public policy in the way of the sustainability of the water resources management. As a form of validation of the proposed index, the research in question, applied the methodology of SIW in 11 watersheds of the Federal District, Brazil. The proposed SIW is composed of four dimensions: environmental, water quality, socioeconomic, and political-institutional. The results of the application of SIW are guided not only in the proposal of the tool of evaluation of the watersheds sustainability, but also in the capacity to point out the main responsible for the advances and the retrocession in the search for the sustainability of watersheds. It was concluded that the SIW was an appropriate tool to support decision-makers and formulators of public policies in the way of a sustainable society.
